Benzema scores against his old club

Benzema,Karim Benzema, Real, Real Madrid, UCL

Real Madrid drew 1-1 in Lyon but were left rueing a late equaliser from Bafetimbu Gomis after Karim Benzema had scored against his old club.

Karim Benzema's subdued celebration after scoring his first goal against his former club was at odds with the overwhelming relief Jose Mourinho felt. It has been a record of futility for the world's most celebrated club against their French opponent. Actually, it was the first time Real had scored against Lyon away.

However, Lyon came back with a Bafetimbi Gomis equalizer to set up a tantalizing second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Dani Aranzubia: Creates La Liga history

95th minute Deportivo de la Coruna is awarded a last gasp corner. The ball comes floating down and a figure in a lime green jersey rises above the thicket of bodies like a champion no 9 and heads the ball goalwards. It is Dani Aranzubia, Depor's custodian soaring into the record books with the first ever goal by a goalkeeper from open play in La Liga history.

The goal evened the score against Almeria and more importantly gave them a 3 point cushion from the drop zone.

Watch Aranzubia's other finest moment. Three penalty stops (PK shootout in its entire 12+ minutes) instrumental in Depor progressing to the next round of the 2008 UEFA Cup at the expense of SK Brann after both teams deadlocked 2-2 on aggregate.

Messi hat trick as Barca create a new winning record

Leo Messi got to 25 goals and Barca got to a record 16 consecutive victories.

Lionel Messi scored another sublime hat-trick for Barcelona tonight as the Catalans strolled to a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou to break Real Madrid's 50-year-old record of 15 straight league victories.

The goal took Messi's Primera Division tally for the season to 24 goals - one more than Cristiano Ronaldo - after 22 games, and the Barça forward has Hugo Sanchez's long-standing record of 38 very much in his sights. Of greater importance to the Catalan club, however, is the difference at the top of the table, which is now ten points over Barça's fierce rivals Real, who host Real Sociedad at the Bernabeu tomorrow.

Osasuna vs Real Madrid 1-0 - Full Match Highlights & All Goals - Extended Highlights - 30/1/2011

Osasuna's Javier Camunas sent Real Madrid into a world of pain with a wonderfully placed strike that clipped the woodwork but fortunately went in (Robin Van Persie will have something to say about that). With this loss, Real are 7 points behind Barca and as Sid Lowe points out, the race for the title maybe all but over. Suddenly Manuel Pellegrini does not look so bad.

Mourinho brought on Emmanuel Adebayor, Kaka, and Xabi Alonso (now which club can boast such bench players?) but to no avail. Mesut Oezil seems to be the one creative spark. Ronaldo was quite invisible other than a hissy fit. Real's woes have come on the road against the bottom dwelling clubs like Mallorca, Levante, Almería and Osasuna who seem to be taking inordinate pleasure in sticking it to Fiorentina Perez's Galacticos version 2.

Sergio Aguero's 2 year old has a wicked right foot

If you have not yet seen it - here is evidence that Arsene Wenger might be signing him soon. Sergio "Kun" Aguero's son, Benjamin all of two years old with bullet kicks and some nice foot skills. He's also got grandpa Maradona's genes. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, does it?
